This is a practical visual support resource. It is not therapy or treatment.
Inside the PDF
- A reusable “My first step” board — place one card on it, draw an action or write a short instruction
- Eight illustrated action cards covering dressing, packing a school bag, tidying, homework and everyday tasks
- Four illustrated help cards: “Show me”, “Start with me”, “I need a break” and “Make it smaller”
- Six worked examples showing how to turn a larger task into a manageable first step
- A parent and carer guide with printing instructions, suggested phrases and ways to respond when starting is still difficult
- What is included
- One five-page PDF in UK A4 format.
- How to use it
- Choose one action that fits the moment. Show the card and read its short phrase aloud if needed. Keep the help cards nearby so your child can point, gesture or hand over a card to ask for support. For example, instead of saying “tidy your room”, show “Put one toy away”, then decide together whether to try another small step or pause.
- Who it is for
- Designed with children aged 5–10 in mind. Children do not need to read independently — the illustrations show each action, while an adult can explain or demonstrate it.
- Designed for everyday support
- Includes diverse children and families, clear illustrations and space to add familiar photographs, drawings or your child’s own words. It allows for help, breaks and movement, and does not use reward charts or require children to complete a whole routine at once.
- Printing
- Print at 100% or Actual size. Cut out the cards and keep the board whole. Lamination is optional. A clear document sleeve lets you use the board with a wipe-clean pen.
- Format
- PDF digital download. No physical item will be posted. This is an everyday visual support tool, not an ADHD assessment or treatment.
